The Data: Please relate what you found back to the material on data analysis and provider profiling. This may include the types of data you found, or the results of the search (outcome results). Did anything come as a surprise?

For the Report this week you will explore different profiling measures for hospitals in your area.

Hospital Profiling

First go to the CMS government website and read about the Hospital Quality Initiative: https://www.cms.gov/HospitalQualityInits/11_HospitalCompare.asp#TopOfPage

Hospital Compare in one resource that allows consumers to see how hospitals compare on a variety of measures in caring for Medicare patients. Thus, it is not representative of the full population, but a really interesting and useful snapshot into that population. At the very bottom of the page is a link to get to the resource. Here is that link too: https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/search.html

Once you are at the Hospital Compare webpage, under Location, you input the zip code where you live or where you work to compare the quality of the care of hospitals in that area. You can also input the name of a hospital you are interested in. Click on Search, and the names of hospitals and the type of care provided within a certain geographic distance are listed. Now check the boxes for the hospitals you’d like to compare, and then click on Compare Now.

On the top of the field are tabs to choose from, including Patient Survey Results, and Timely and Effective Care (to name two). Explore the different tabs to get different summary measures. The Timely and Effective Care will have outcome measures, especially when you click on the View Graphs and the View More Details tabs on the left. More than anything—play with this and have some fun! I hope you enjoy exploring this resource!

Formatting for the assignment:

  1. Introduction: Describe your process—the location you chose and steps you took.
  2. The Data: Please relate what you found back to the material on data analysis and provider profiling. This may include the types of data you found, or the results of the search (outcome results). Did anything come as a surprise?
  3. Wrap up: How long did it take you to complete the assignment? What did you think of doing this assignment? Was it enjoyable and a good learning exercise, or did you run into problems in your search and get frustrated? Did you not really get into it?
  4. References in APA style.

Length: The assignment can be one concise page, and should be no more than two pages long. I prefer single spacing rather than double or multiple.
