During virtual patient appointments, the red flags I use to rule out the “worst case scenario” are endless, severe back pain and pain during physical activities like walking or rolling in bed. I learned that I can use concussions, confusion, dizziness, movement disturbances, fainting and collapse, blurred vision, lethargy, dizziness, headaches, and migraines as warning signs when diagnosing neurological conditions. I also learned that a red flag is a set of symptoms, clinical data, signs, or situations envisioned by a clinician that should lead to increased suspicion and additional investigation of a serious condition (De Groote & Falisse, 2021).
