Steve Jobs and Reed Hastings are highly successful businessmen who lead breakthrough, innovative companies. Apple and Netflix completely changed their respective industries by looking beyond the current standards and procedures and devising plans to reshape the future. Each man took a different leadership approach throughout their career at the company, yet they share many common characteristics.
The leadership qualities both men shared were that they were visionary, transformational leaders. According to Konopaske et. al, visionary leaders “see the big picture and the opportunities the big picture presents” (2018). Both Jobs and Hastings looked outside current product offerings and toward the future. They understood that they might struggle in the beginning to release attractive and successful products, but they had an idea and worked toward making that idea come to fruition. Additionally, a transformational leader is one who establishes a vision and rouses their employees to work toward achieving these ideas (Konopaske et al., 2018). While these men did not know what the future held for their organization, they were continuously searching for methods to innovate and improve their current position in the market by leading their team of employees.
While there were similarities between the leadership styles of the Apple and Netflix CEOs, there were key differences. Jobs used more of a job-centered approach because he frequently supervised employees while they worked. He was also petulant, impatient, and a perfectionist (Isaacson, 2012). He was controlling toward his workers, and he erected a steep expectations bar that he expected his employees to clear. He stressed to his workers that they could do the impossible if they did not think the task was impossible. This leader instilled in his employees a passion to develop groundbreaking products and believing that could do it. “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish” was a phrase Jobs proudly stood behind, and he wished for everyone he worked with think beyond company and society norms (Isaacson, 2012).
Reed Hastings, on the other hand, took a different leadership approach compared to Jobs. He was more of an employee-centered leader, and he believed his role was to inspire his employees rather than supervise them (Shapiro, 2020). He enriched his workers with flavors of creativity, flexibility, and responsibility when conducting their tasks, and he encouraged everyone to innovate new ideas. Especially in his creative enterprise, Hastings supported that workers provide their input and position and challenge current mindsets to those thinking of future possibilities.
If I could choose to work for a leader with either job-centered or employee-centered styles, I would select an employee-centered leader. I feel like I would be more comfortable working with someone I could interact with on a more personal level. I would not feel guilty if I was struggling and needed help. I could reach out to my leader or manager and seek guidance or their thoughts on how I could become a better worker. With a leader focused on the job and its output, I believe there is a lack of human connection between the leader and the employee. They want the job done and done well, and they might not be as considerate about their employee’s feelings. Knowing my personality, I need to trust that someone understands that I am doing my best, and at times I need more cheerleading to help me through a difficult patch.
